Gary M. –West Fork Ranch
The West Fork Ranch in Peeples Valley Arizona has history dating back to the 1800’s. Gary M has been the Ranch Foreman for several years. He was born in Plainview Nebraska in 1948, moving to Arizona in 1966. Gary learned the trade of a cowpuncher, first working for the Lockett Ranch in the Flagstaff area for almost 15 years. After hiring on with a couple of other outfits, including the Cartwright Ranch at 7 Springs, in 2003 he landed a job with the Maughan Ranches and signed on at the West Fork Ranch. The Ranch has 6 sections containing3840 acres. They raise Cattle and Horses. At present he has17 Brood Mares, 2 Stallions, 12 Yearlings, and 12 two Year Olds. The Cattle consist of 67 Angus Cows, 26 Replacement Bulls, and 30 Replacement Heifers. Gary is at home on his Quarter Horse “Libby” and with a smile confesses the Ranch does keep him busy but he could not imagine doing anything else. As he said to me” Horses are smarter than most folks and cattle are a whole lot easier.”
Gary and his crew are scrambling to get the West Fork prepared for the 79th annual Calf sale & BBQ. This year the Yavapai Cattles Growers Association will be holding the event On September 24. Gary said this year they built a new “Pit BBQ” and the West Fork will be ready. In years past the event has attracted a couple thousand folks. It should be a fun day for all
